Dear Jack, Dear Louise is a beautiful retelling of writer Ken Ludwig’s parents’ World War II love story. Jack is a young doctor heading toward the front lines, and Louise is a beautiful aspiring actress. While the state of the world continually keeps them from meeting, they fall deeply in love through writing each other letters. The focus of this design was to capture the classic beauty and practicality of the late 1940s while maintaining a warm and romantic visual tone for the show. The design was made to allow the actors to continually change onstage as they moved through three years of the war, across time zones and through seasons. Jack’s design featured detailed period uniform choices evocative of a doctor training and then heading to the front lines, and Louise’s design featured classic base silhouettes with mix and match accessories such as overskirts and pinafores to create a “capsule” wardrobe highlighting the elegance of a woman of the time.
