Bright Star, Steve Martin and Edie Brickell’s Bluegrass Musical Love Letter to North Carolina transforms the legend of the Iron Mountain Baby into a story of longing, loss, and the heart of southern writers. This production specifically used imagery of wisteria in the blue ridge mountains, evoking the intertwined nature of wisteria trees and the surrounding landscape they embed themselves into. The spirits were designed as wisteria dryads, intertwining the lives of the characters they danced through and watched play out. Other features of this design included a melodrama style villain, the juxtaposition of color and silhouette in rural and urban communities, and the ability for an ensemble and leading lady to visually move with ease between 1923 and 1945. With a talented cast of movers, all of the costumes also had to function in a high energy movement show with lots of dance numbers.
